"Lau-kia-manu-i-kahiki" watercolor and pastel by Kauai artist, Joanna Carolan. High quality print on acid free paper matted in antique white. Available in the sizes listed above. Lau-kia-manu-i-kahiki was the daughter of the goddess Hina and the chief Makioeoe. She was born and raised on the island of Kauai. She was so beautiful it is said that light radiated from her when she slept at night. When Lau-kia-manu-i-kahiki came of age, the chief had instructed that she be sent to him in a red canoe clothed in red. However, Lau-kia-manu-i-kahiki refused to travel by sea. Lau-kia-manu-i-kahiki married Kahiki-ula. When Kahiki-ula returned to his first wife on Oahu, Lau-kia-manu-i-kahiki was inconsolable. She was so in love that she conquered her fear of sea travel, clung to a friendly turtle, and followed her husband to Oahu.
